Study on the Physical Growth and Nutritional Status of the Korean Youth in an Urban Area



Abstract
For the purpose of ascertaining status of physical and nutritional status of the University student, an intensive survey was conducted by the authors towards a total of 1,427 (male: 1,103, female: 324) who passed the written entrance examination at the measurement on physical growth, various physical and nutritional indices, status of visual disturbance. The findings and results can be summarized as follows; 1. Physical growth and development 1) The averages of body height by sex were 169.50?4.56 cm in male and 157.38¡¾4.51 cm in female, respectively. 2) The averages of body weight were 60.00?6.80 kg and 51.85?5.66 kg. 3) The averages of chest-girth were 87.98?5.18 cm and 82.62?4.82 cm. 4) The averages of sitting-height were 91.86?3.28 cm and 86.26?2.74 cm. In all cases the male measurements were higher than female. 2. Physical and nutritional indices 1) Relative body weight were 35.4 in male and 32.9 in female. 2) Relative chest-girth by sex were 51.9 and 52.8. 3) Relative sitting-height were 54.2 and 54.8. 4) Rohrer index were 1.23 and 1.33, and Kaup index were 2.09 in both of sex, respectively.5) Vervaeck index of the nutritional status were 87.3 in male and 85.4 in female. 3. Status of visual disturbance The vision of the students under 0.9 with Landolt¢¥s testing chart was 61.0% in left eye and 61.2% in right eye (male: 61.0% and 59.8%, female: 62.0% and 66.0%), while under 0.6 in both vision was 50.4% and 48.9% (male: 49.0% and 47.5%, female: 52.0% and 53.7%), respectively.
